Introduction

Today, Success Titan presents you the owner of the record label and television/film company N’credible Entertainment, the creator and host of MTV’s sketch comedy show Wild ‘n Out, America’s Got Talent host for 7 years, and the star of such big hits as Drumline and Love Don’t Cost a Thing.

He went from being born to teen parents in the projects of San Diego and affiliating himself with ‘Bloods’ to managing such artists as Soulja Boy, Amber Rose, Kehlani, Colette Carr, and Make It Pop.

He currently sits as the chairman of Teen Nick, where he has also been a consultant with development and creation since 2009.

Thanks to his optimism in the hard times, belief in not waiting for opportunities, but speaking it into existence and enough self-motivation not to be brought down by others’ opinions, he has amassed an estimated fortune of $50 million.

Early Life

Nick Cannon was born in the projects in Southern California, a low-income area of San Diego. He was raised primarily by his grandfather because his parents were both teens when he was born.

His mother, an accountant, and his father, a televangelist separated when he was still young, so he grew up shuttling back and forth between North Carolina and California.

As young as the age of 5, he was introducing himself by his full name because he felt like, “that’s my name, and people should know.”

Nick Cannon was first introduced to music and developed a love for it at the age of 8 when his grandfather gave him some musical instruments. He also began stand-up comedy and was told by his father to “write something up” for a chance to perform on his show.

This stand-up performance ended up becoming Nick Cannon’s first TV appearance at the age of 11 and led to many performances around well-known comedy clubs in the future.

“The Cannon,” so he says, was born at age 13. Nick tells a story of losing his virginity to an older girl, crying, and then being made fun of and laughed at by a group of girls.

He vowed from that day forward no woman would ever laugh at him ‘in the sack’ again and considers this to be the birth of “The Cannon.”

Career & Hustle

Nick Cannon’s career started early, and his hustle stemmed from a young, energetic performer but truly started in High School, where he began to shine not only in comedy but with a rap group called ‘Da G4 Dope Bomb Squad’ with TI. and Chingy.

This allowed him to receive his first-ever ‘big paycheck’ opening for Will Smith, even beginning a mentorship as Smith told Cannon he reminded him of a younger version of himself.

In 1995 Nick Cannon got his first big break on TV as a ‘warm-up comedian’ on the Nickelodeon show All That. His performance showed great potential, and his on-screen appeal led to a full-time slot on the show.

He began bouncing around different Nickelodeon programs not only through acting but through writing as well, becoming the youngest staff writer in history at the age of 17! It wasn’t long before his skills and charisma scored him a show of his own.

The Turning Point

In 2002 Cannon really broke out in the scene with his self-titled show in which he wrote, produced, and acted! That same year, his mentorship with Will Smith allowed him his first big break on film, although a small part, in Men in Black II.

Later that year, Cannon got his first starring role in the movie Drumline. Although it was a big feature, he didn’t make much money in comparison and said he would have done that movie for free.

Success Knocks on Nick Cannon’s Door

By the mid-2000s, Nick Cannon was off to the races and tremendously successful in not just films but music, comedy, and television.

The success of “Love Don’t Cost a Thing” not only led to Cannon’s first multi-million-dollar paycheck but also a relationship with co-star Christina Milian.

His first two movies helped to create his image as the young heartthrob, which would eventually lead to dating Kim Kardashian and Nicole Scherzinger.

Cannon did not stop writing music during his rise in films. He wrote, co-produced, and released his self-titled album in 2003, along with several other albums, and gave many large performances, including the extremely popular Soul Train Awards in 2005.

On Television, Cannon created, produced, and starred in his own show Wild ‘n Out, which was released in 2005. A few years later, he achieved a long-standing goal of marrying his life-long crush, Mariah Carey in 2008 (although separating in 2014).

In 2009 Nick Cannon became the host of America’s Got Talent(2009-2016), created ‘N Credible Entertainment where he has managed Amber Rose, Soulja Boy, and more as well as becoming the Chairman for Teen Nick and Nickelodeon’s development and creative consultant.

Through ‘N Credible Entertainment he continues to manage and produce music, television shows, and films such as the current show The Masked Singer as well as continuing work at Nickelodeon.

3 Lessons We Can Learn From Nick Cannon’s Story

1. It’s not about who you know; it’s about who knows you.

When you look at Nick Cannon’s work, you’ll find that most of his acting jobs have been roles as himself. He has accomplished this primarily through hosting and comedy. This is only possible by being authentic and creating a unique image/identity of your own.

3. Don’t Set Limits!

Nick Cannon refused to acknowledge himself as having any limitations from a young age. He could not have accomplished his TV appearance on his dad’s show, nor the Nickelodeon show “All That” if he used his past in the projects or the lack of success of his peers to limit his future.

1.   Be Self-Motivated.

It would not have been possible for Nick Cannon to produce the amount or type of work he did if he listened to all the naysayers.
